In the practice of mindfulness, how can instructors support participants in cultivating the power of mindfulness? What are the qualities that instructors themselves should reflect on and develop in order to provide that support?
One tool that is used to support the self-reflection of instructors is the Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Teaching and Learning Companion (MBI:TLC). This tool allows instructors to reflect on their skills across six domains, including curriculum and relationships with participants.
The MBI:TLC, which serves as the basis for this tool, was originally developed to establish standards for evaluation when mindfulness was incorporated into the curriculum of universities in the UK, and to ensure the quality of mindfulness courses during research studies.
The TLC, which we are introducing today, was created with a primary focus on supporting instructors, rather than evaluating them.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Gemma Griffith, who serves as the Director of the Mindfulness Programmes at Bangor University, where the TLC is managed and hosted. Dr. Griffith will share her insights on what the TLC is, and how self-reflection can support mindfulness instructors in their own development.
